How to spot a writing job scam
If a prospect tells you they will pay via cashier's check, run!
It's a scam.
I get my fair share of writing opportunities per month, so some of them work out, and I gain new clients; others don't materialize, and some are pure scams.
So, how do you spot a writing partner scam? Look at this Email below.
The person who contacted me said they would pay with a cashier's check because "My sponsor is an old-fashioned businessman."
No thanks!
And what exactly is a sponsor if you are a client?
Huge red flag.
After being scammed once a few years ago (which gutted me), here is what I look for to determine if the offer is spam
π©Β Unusual payment methods: Be wary if a prospect suggests payment via cashier's check. This is a common tactic in scams. Why? Because scammers can use counterfeit checks that might initially clear but later bounce, leaving you liable for the amount. Instead, opt for secure payment methods like PayPal, or direct bank transfers.
π©Β Suspicious contact information: A generic email provider, such as Gmail, without professional affiliation, can be a warning sign. Legitimate businesses often use emails linked to their domain name
π©Β Too-good-to-be-true offers: An offer that seems excessively lucrative for the required effort should raise eyebrows. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
π©Β Vague assignments: Be cautious of requests for generic content, like an article on "the importance of social media," without specific details or context. Legitimate clients usually have specific needs and provide detailed briefs.
π©Β Urgency in communication: Scammers often press for immediate decisions, attempting to rush you without giving time for proper consideration. Take your time to research and think over any offer.
π©Β Additional purchases required: A request to buy software or hardware as a condition for the job is a clear indicator of a scam. You should not have to pay to work.
Have you encountered any writing job scams?Β
Do tell!
