No, not lack of confidence
One thing I am grateful for is that for as long as I can remember, I have had a beginner's mind.
One thing I am grateful for is that for as long as I can remember, I have had a beginner's mind or Shoshin.
Shoshin is a concept from Zen Buddhism, meaning beginner's mind.
It refers to having an attitude of openness, eagerness, and lack of preconceptions when studying, even at an advanced level, just as a beginner would.
I have a number of flaws, but I'm glad that I have always wanted to learn, improve, and advance.
I try to approach everything in life with this attitude: "How can I improve?".
Even after 25 years as a writer and a journalist, I still sometimes embrace writing as a beginner. "How can I become better?"
This doesn't mean I lack confidence but rather a dedication to growth.
In his book Fooled by Randomness, Nassim Taleb wrote, "I try to remind my group each week that we are all idiots and know nothing, but we have the good fortune of knowing it."
Are you intrigued?
Here are ways to cultivate a Shoshin mindset:
Actively seek out new challenges and perspectives. Step outside your comfort zone and explore unfamiliar territory.
Embrace questions over answers. Be curious, don't be afraid to ask "why?" or "how?" Don’t shy away from asking “stupid questions.”
Practice active listening. Truly listen to understand, not just to respond.
Celebrate small wins: Every experience is a chance to grow.
Do you have a Shoshin mind? Do share!
